I can get all emotional now and write down all the drama I have at this point, but I won’t. I would be too selfish to do that. Yes, I won’t deny the fact that I am at one of my lowest points. (True. Right after the I-passed-the-board-exam happiness. Guess you really can never be too happy. Having too much of anything is always bad.) However, hearing the news makes me feel so guilty cause I know I’m sulking over some petty drama every girl goes through.
After Ondoy hit Manila, the whole country was hand-in-hand in prayer and in rebuilding what was lost. It was a candle light turned into a fire of hope. Thank you to the power of media and the new technology. It was not only information that was easily disseminated, but as well as the love and the hope that everyone needed at that time. We all knew life would not end there so after the tragedy, we worked hard to move on from what seemed like the worst dream of the nation. And up to now, there are still overwhelming, continuous efforts in helping the victims.
Then, there was this Manny Pacquiao victory over Miguel Cotto. Just like every match Manny Pacquiao faces, there was a 0% crime rate in the Philippines because the whole country was united in supporting him. In fact according to Time Magazine, he is the great hope. (Well, his private life is a whole different story. I’ll have my say on that.) Filipinos all over the world look forward to his fights because we are anticipating a moment of pride, a time to put our best foot forward while the whole world is watching.
A few days after, there is our very own Efren Penaflorida named as 2009 CNN Hero of the Year. He is a teacher/social worker who started Kariton Klasrum (pushcart classes), giving the underprivileged children the chance to education. He is another reason why we were able to stand up proud once more. Without bias, I personally think he deserved the award for he is making this country take a big step forward. I am a believer of education and the changes it brings to a person, a community, and a nation.
We knew we were getting up from the tragedy… until this Maguindanao massacre surfaced. It was too much to take. Humans were given the mind to think and to differentiate what is right from what is wrong. We were given the heart to love, to live in harmony and peace with everyone else. But what happened? Some people have gone beyond their limits.
Did they really think taking the lives of these people are worth it for power, fame and money?
We need justice Gloria. Do this before you step down. Give us hope.
